The CNIT National Laboratory of Photonic Networks (LNRF) is one of the two national Laboratories owned by Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Telecomunicazioni (CNIT). It was created in Pisa in 2001. The research staff operating in the Center consists of CNIT employees and many affiliated faculties, researchers,  Ph.D. students belonging to the collocated Center of Excellence for Information and Communication Engineering of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. Overall, the Center counts approximately 50 researchers.

The Laboratory is currently gathers three main sections: the Integrated Research Center for Photonic Networks and Technologies (IRCPhoNeT), the Radar and Surveillance Systems (RaSS) Center and the Biophotonics Area.

Overal, the research activities of the LNRF cover the areas of optical networks, optical systems and transmissions, sensors, ultrafast photonics, digital photonics, optical sampling radar, biophotonics.
